Jarryd Hayne’s Olympic dream is over — but an NRL return could be good news for everyone
Posted by colin hussey on July 11, 2016 at 9:43pm
OK its another Hayne story & its by our old mate Kent, but it makes some interesting reading & I will highlight the bits
Paul KentThe Daily Telegraph
AFTER Jarryd Hayne completes his third, lesser known dream — riding for Gai in the Cup — the door is open to his return to Parramatta next season.
Hayne will have an entire summer to rebuild the muscle after wasting to the 53kg limit. Anything in the prizemoney will be considered a successful stint.
In the meantime, Hayne will continue exploring a return to the Parramatta Eels after getting told that he would not be picked to represent Fiji at next month’s Olympics
A stint in rugby is unlikely now that he played Sevens for Fiji. It rules him ineligible for an Australian Rugby Union top-up if he chose to play Super Rugby and Hayne is far too valuable to play for chump money.
European rugby remains the only financial option which, given his acute homesickness in San Francisco during his 49ers stint, makes the NRL far more attractive.
In a rare moment of happy circumstance for the Eels, Kieran Foran’s shock exit from the club might make it an easy, simple swap.
Only Foran’s release would free enough money to accommodate Hayne’s contract now that the club’s preferred methods have been shut down.
But will the NRL fumble an opportunity to improve the game in preference of the feel-good headline?
Always, the best time for change is during a crisis. They create possibilities.
Proper change is often possible only once a crisis takes hold and there is widespread understanding that change must occur. Great companies have been built on the back of such opportunities.
The NRL has been presented a golden chance to dive into the murky world of third party payments and illegal salary cap payments and clean it up, for the good of the game, while so many remain so angry at Parramatta’s actions.
The unfairness of third party payments benefiting some clubs far more than others is one of the great problems in the game. It creates a pressure that ends in ugly headlines like the Eels have created this season.
Clubs are aware of it happening at other clubs, or at least the perception it is, and face enormous pressures to compete on equal grounds. It is easy to understand why.
Since 1998, there have been just three seasons where no club was later found to be cheating, according to the NRL’s website. They are 2003 and 2011-12. There was no cap in 1998-99.
With such a poor record of honesty, it is easy to recognise why there is pressure on clubs to cheat. And the NRL’s unwillingness to kick over stones fails to discourage anyone.
There is other, more difficult ground to cover if Hayne returns.
Among the thousands of documents investigating Parramatta’s illegal third party payments there was a spreadsheet detailing secret payments to Hayne.
There is no suggestion Hayne knew the payments were illegally kept off the cap. The way they were displayed in the Eels’ spreadsheet, though, certainly caught the NRL’s interest.
It became part of the case to justify stripping Parramatta of 12 premiership points, fining it $1 million and banning five officials who oversaw the rorting.
Isn’t this an opportunity? You would think so.
Over the weekend NRL boss Todd Greenberg said the investigation would move to the next stage and examine potential wrongdoing by player managers. Information will be passed on to the accreditation scheme.
On Monday, a day later, Greenberg welcomed the possibility of Hayne returning.
NRL CEO Todd Greenberg could also use Hayne’s return to affect change at Parramatta.
It came within hours of Hayne’s omission from Rio when news emerged that the Eels, who must win every game to make the finals, were trying to sign him for the remainder of this season.
He beats the June 30 deadline rule because it applies only to those registered to play rugby league. Still, given Parramatta’s dire salary cap position it would take considerable help from the NRL to get Hayne into the blue and gold before the end of season.
This gives the NRL considerable leverage. Hayne’s return is not exclusive to the cap investigation.
Two seasons ago Brisbane football manager Andrew Gee walked away from the game to avoid being compelled to give evidence to allegations of salary cap improprieties at Brisbane. The NRL said Gee would be allowed back only if he answered those questions.
If nothing else, Parramatta’s situation warrants answers from Hayne. His potential return gives the NRL that opportunity.
More, the entire cap scandal gives them an opportunity to fix the cap and third parties and return integrity to the game.

1 Hayne story (back at Parra) would make up for all the bad stories.

So let me get this straight Paul K**t, you would like Hayne interrogated over money he received from Parra while playing another sport....yeah massive cap scandal right there. Give you the heads up champ to gain an unfair advantage you probably need that player (you are paying unfairly) to actually play for you!
Oh and wasn't it Paul K**t and several other journos slamming the eels for not taking advantage of using Haynes success in USA to promote the Parra brand there, maybe they were and that's why he got paid!

Bart. not sure that is what Kent is saying, the thrust of the article that I get from it anyway is that it would appear that the depth of the NRL's investigations into managers as well as the TPA items overall may actually happen, should that be the case then, as Kent starts off saying that a Crisis provides the opportunity for change, all that the fans of all clubs hope & especially of the eels is that it is a fair dinkum in application across the board.

Mate I totally agree we need change this TPA system is a joke and i still think most of the media, ex players and prob every supporter don't fully understand it. The NRL have had plenty of opportunity to investigate and take on player managers and change the system in the past and they haven't and for Paul Kent to now suggest the NRL hold a gun to Haynes head and say tell us all you know or your not coming back sounds like another opportunity for Kent to push his agenda's. He could of pushed this with the Bronco's he didn't and why cause he works for their owners News limited.
I just don't trust the bloke, and its a shame cause he actually has some balls unlike most other journo's.

Bart, I'm with you & understand what you are saying. When I read this article I had to check it over a few times to make sure it was Kents name to it. By careful reading, of the content what I see is not a journo saying or suggesting that the NRL hold a gun to Haynes head, but he is somehow turned round & perhaps realizing what most of the eels supporters have been saying for some time now in regard to the cap, TPA's, NRL & all the other issues need addressing.
Journo's like him live on items that can draw on sensation & also can be ones that can be spun out to keep the headlines active. The prospect of more issues dealing with bagmen, illegal areas to investigate are pure gold for them, & following on from the eels woe's which will now progressivelysimmer down once the new board comes into play, there is need for ongoing sensation, & again no better to use a current incident & see how much mileage can be gained from it.
I have little doubt that many supporters look at the eels punishment seeing it as being too lenient, especially if they are followers of past affected teams, but they more than likely also see the issues with the payments, player managers & the NRL itself, Greenburg is not just unpopular with the eels but with most supports as well.
In the end any little bit of pointing to holes in the system can be taken as a positive, & that's how I see this story.

all the nrl and parra eels dont give a stuff what kent writes , it was just on foxsports a interview with lara pitt and todd greenberge , its very clear the nrl ceo wants hayne back not next year but soon maybe with in 2 weeks.
the way i see it, todd spoke well of brad arthur and snr players of the eels and said over the past months he spoke with them, and hes said just look at what they did friday, against the roosters its amazing,, there a very tight bunch who just go out there and give it all for the team. look he was saying nice things about the eels players,it seems hayne can bring along good press world wide if he signs with the eels ,and will bring along new sponsors.
the hayne brad name very strong, todd greenberge knows very well signing hayne means a new start at the eels.
and on reports hayne cross training, in nfl and fiji 7s rugby should have him in top shape right now, reports are strong hayne has trained with wenty when in sydney..so there kept that low key, if reports are true, hayne has agreed to terms with the eels and nrl , and what i have heard he may play 5/8 till next year , if hayne plays this week against penrith just think of the media buzz, if we won and made the top 8 with hayne in our team ,its just a huge story, leading into 2017 with the nrl backing ,but we must clear the board and move on.. hayne made a small statement, he will be back in sydney in a few days and work out hes next moves, we all hope that will be hayne in fact lining up for the eels this week against penrith or the next week.. thank you and stuff kent hes a a grade arsehole..

it seems foran walking out on the eels may have been cleared up by both foran and the eels a few weeks back and the nrl,and now clears the way for the return of hayne, and by a few rumours hayne may have pulled out of the fiji 7s with the blessings of the nrl. so a deal may well be on the table by todd greenberge.. we can only hope hayne comes home with hes brand name and many sponsors to join the rise from the ashes of a new eels in 2017

Robert, no doubt that all want Hayne back in the NRL its really a given. Thing is that the way Greenburg is going on, & this is just a personal opinion, & I too do not trust any journo anywhere at all, that TG wants to shore up his position as CEO of the NRL, & I have serious reservations about how he & the others have reviewed what the board submitted in defence & appeal. (We will never know his attitude though)
His handing down the decision on Saturday & wry smile at the beginning & reading his statement to claim the 5 members did at no time accept that they had done anything wrong. Would not accept responsibility & to me he was blind to the rest. That said, there is no way the 5 should stay, nor should the others, & if appeals come up its at their cost.
I see TG as very much two faced, his junior in Seward along with Jason Irvine have admitted to cash payments to players now, & what he says to me cannot be trusted or believed, I do not like Kent or the others, but let TG come out & deny the aspect of allowing Hayne back to the eels as being conditional on no appeal by the 5.
I would also like to see the report from Schubert saying the club was over the cap by around $500k whereas the NRL has it at $1.8m & have both statements independently checked & verified.
Certainly having Hayne back in the NRL along with being at the eels would be huge for the game, both the club & the NRL, & is TG setting himself as the one who made it happen? He is kingpin, super guru & the like. Having him back not just on the paddock but in the amount of publicity he will bring to whichever club he goes to & on that score will bring in big sponsorship dollars.
The sooner he comes back the better & that especially applies to the eels if he comes here. It sets up perhaps a grand stand finish for this year, & more than add to the overall positive feel on the field into the future with a new board in place that has the clubs interests as the primary, without factions.
